FREEDOM PARK REBUILDS
10 years ago, after 8 years of lobbying for a BMX track in Camarillo, we we given the keys to a one acre parcel in the corner of Freedom Park at the Camarillo Airport. When asked if it would suffice for a BMX track, we thought, “No way”. But responded, “absolutely”. Not knowing how in the world we could squeeze a track onto this property. Or at least any legitimate track. Although we built a track that was 3 turns and less than 700′, we only operated for 3 months before extenuating circumstances had us closed for over 2 years. The track became overgrown with weeds and the dream of a BMX track in Camarillo seemed, well, a dream again.
But by summer 2007, we were approached to resume operations and the lights were installed. We cleaned up the little 3 turn track, set up a card table, and started racing. That was December ’07. Now, we’re into our 7th year of operation and after 2 major rebuilds and 2 smaller ones, after obtaining the extra property between the track and the roller hockey rink beside us, after the building of our office and shop, we are just completing our 3rd and most ambitious rebuild – a design that has been a vision of ours since we started all those years ago with 3 turns and a folding table.
Now, at approximately 1000 feet with a huge new over/under bridge new concessions building, an expansive new paved entrance, and “Freedom Plaza” overlooking it all, FP BMX is truly “The raddest little track in BMX!” All that said, we want to thank the many riders, supports, parents, volunteers, donors, etc. – more than we could ever name – that have finally brought us here. Enjoy the ride!
